Week 38  May 23-27, 2016

We did it!  We made it to our last week and with smiles on our faces.  I am looking forward to my last few days with your children.  Here is an overview of the week ahead.

Homework:   We will have the students take home their pink Spalding Books and select 10 words to write down each night.  On Friday, we will have an in-class spelling bee, giving everyone an opportunity to spell the words they practiced.

Monday and Tuesday:  These are full days of learning.  We will practice math concepts we have learned, and read many short stories in both literature and in history.  In science we will continue to study plant and animal life in the oceans of the world.

Dismissal is 2:45 Monday and Tuesday

Wednesday:  This is a fun day!  We will be traveling around the first floor visiting each classroom, which will be set up as one of the seven continents.  Our class will represent South America.  Each room will have snacks for the students and a passport book they will be able to keep.

Thursday: Students may bring a bag from home to take their desk items home today.  We will work hard to clean out our desks, and then review for our spelling bee!

Friday:  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!  We will have our in class spelling bee, sign our yearbooks, and have a little going away party.  I have plenty of juices left over from Frontier Days and popcorn for all. You may send something in if you wish, but I have enough for everyone!

Classes will be dismissed at 11:45 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday - These are half days!

Please let me know if you would like to hire a tutor for the summer.  The school has many teachers who are willing to work with your students.

Have a wonderful, restful, and safe summer!
Thanks for the memories!

Congratulations to my second graders! You are equipped to do well next year!

Love,
Mrs. Sipe

Week 37  May 16-20, 2016

Thank you!  Thank you! Thank you!  From the bottom of my heart!  We had such a successful Frontier Day Event.  It would not have happened without all of you helping to make it so special.  We had the attention of all Archway, and even a special visitor came and remarked about how happy all the children were here!  At the end of the day Mr. Gillingham came up to me and thanked me for taking the time and effort to make this such a special day.  I told him without our wonderful parents none of this would be possible!

This week we will continue to read our short stories and act them out in individual plays.

In History we will read Historical Biographies of Amelia Earhart and Henry Ford.  We will make airplanes and have own assembly line production!

In science we will continue to investigate the oceans of the world, including animal and plant life.  They really enjoy this unit.

For spelling we will review words from previous lists.  I want to make sure they can spell the daily words such as days of the week, months of the year etc. to prepare them for next year.

In math we will finish off the year studying money and making change.  We have our little classroom store, and then we have an actual store for them to purchase items with their 1B bucks they earned.

Parents ....if you have not already purchased your child's kits,  please follow the link below to purchase your kits for next year.  The window for this is about to close and you will not be able to do this later!!!!

Have a great week!

WEEK 36     May 9-13, 2016

We had a wonderful week carving our keelboats, cutting apples to dehydrate, and creating our cereal box book reports! It's amazing that we accomplished all this and completed Dibels testing too!
Next week will be the end of the year Singapore Assessments.  Please make sure your students are getting their rest so they can do their best.

Next Friday is our Famous Frontier Day at Archway!  The news is already spreading abroad and there are many excited students ready to participate.  Check the sign-up in case there are any items missing that we need. We are still in need of "dress up" clothes for our photo booth...especially boy shirts.

THANK YOU!!!!!! Parents for the wonderful gifts I received this week.  I am so honored to be your child's teacher, with or without gifts!  Hopefully we have created first grade memories to last a lifetime!

It is time to return all the readers and chapter books.  I hope your child will continue to read all summer long to keep their skills sharp for second grade.

Week 35   May 2-6, 2016

I hope everyone had a restful three days!  We have a lot to look forward to this week.  Students will be creating a book report project using cereal boxes.  This is an advanced skill, but I think they will do a great job.  If you haven't sent an empty cereal box in yet, please do asap so we may put our project together this week.

PLEASE!  Check out the sign-up genius for our supply list and volunteer help for the Frontier Day Event on May 13.  It will be here before we know it!

In math we will be studying money! Students will be able to recognize $1, $5, $10, $20 money increments, and also learn to make change.  To make this a fun activity we will create a store in the room.  We have cash registers already, bags and money.  All we need now are empty containers from your pantry to help stock our store!  We will work on this along with completing review segments for our end of the year assessment.

Happy Birthday to Honor

This month's virtue focus will be on wisdom.
We learn from our mistakes and think before we act.  We look to the great thinkers of the past for guidance on making good choices.

Have a great week!
