Week 24   February 8-12, 2016

Remember...We have Friday February 12, and Monday February 15 off. It is an R&R weekend so there is no homework!

Thursday, February 11 is our Great Hearts Day, and we will be celebrating the virtue of Friendship in the classroom. Please remember NOT to send Valentines that day.
All week long we will be collecting NEW bath towels and washcloths for It's a New Leaf to distribute to needy families.

February 24 (Wednesday) will be our field trip day.  We already have the 6 parents we need for this event.  We will be going to the Mesa Community College Planetarium to have a grand finale of our month of studying space.  Afterwards, we will have lunch at a park and the students will be ready to go home at 1:45.

We will be reading Our Father's Dragon in a week.  If you have not purchased a copy for your child, please do so this week. Students may bring them to class as soon as they have them.

February is Black History Month, a time for remembering important people and events in history related to people from Africa.  It was started by college students in 1970.  The U.S. recognized it officially in l976 as part of the U.S. Bicentennial. President Gerald Ford encouraged Americans to, "seize the opportunity to honor the too often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history."
We will be reading biographies about Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King and discussing the events in their lives that lead to change.

History

We will continue our study of Mexico and it's contributions to America.  We will end our study by making a piñata for our Great Hearts Day Celebration.

Science

This week we will be exploring all the planets.  I really love how the students are keeping up their moon journaling.  It is not required, but those that are doing it are having a great time. On Friday we made Oreo Cookie phases of the moon. Ask them about it!

Math

This week we will work on multiplication facts by repeated addition.  We will also use rectangular arrays to illustrate multiplication facts and solve picture problems by multiplication.

Homework:

Monday: Wkbk pages 83-85
Tuesday: Wkbk pages 86-88
Wednesday:Wkbk pages 89-92
Thursday: Wkbk pages 93-100

Thank you for all the gifts and helping me celebrate my birthday last Monday.  I will put the gift card to good use!

I can recommend the conference by Dr. Charles Faye, the founder of the Love and Logic discipline curriculum.  I saw him in person last summer and it was very entertaining.  He uses a lot of examples and has great stories.  He can answer many of the questions you may have concerning the training and disciplining of your children.  The details are in the Newsletter you received this weekend from Archway.

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another:  "What! You too? I thought I was the only one."

- C.S. Lewis

Have a wonderful week!
