Happy Fall Everyone!
Did anyone happen to see the full red moon tonight? Also known as the Harvest Moon.
Many thanks to all of you for working so diligently with your children to accomplish the homework goals. If you went to the Singapore/Spalding night you probably know that the homework we give should not take more than 45 minutes to complete. Your students know how to do their work swiftly and confidently in class, so I expect they should do that for you as well. The math scores and spelling score are phenomenal so I know you are doing a great job!
Please reach out to me if you need help. I will gladly call you and speak to you personally. I have some time in the day to work with students who need some extra help. I am here for you and your child. Use me!
Spelling:
Monday - child, ice, play, sea, see, bird, cool, earth, feed, fur
Tuesday - green, oil, paint, pool, tooth, teeth, worm, day, eat, sits,
sit
Wednesday - write all 21 words ONCE, no markings. Practice for
test on Thursday.
Thursday - Spelling test - in class. No Homework.
Homework - The students are to write their words three times each night with markings. Each time written will receive one point (total 3 Points).
At the bottom of the page they will write a sentence using some of their words. I will be looking for capitals (names, and beginning of the sentence) and correct punctuation (question marks, periods, exclamation points). This sentence will be worth 2 points. The whole page each night will be worth 5 points. Five points will be given when they practice for the test on the night they write them once with no markings (usually on Thursday, except for this week which will be done on Wednesday). Please let me know if I can help with this..
Literature - We will continue reading Owl at Home. It was so nice seeing new faces for reading groups this week. The students love it!
Thank you for having your child read each night. They may read their leveled reader or another book. Write the title on the line and they can color the star. If you would like another leveled reader send me a note in the folder or email me. I am going to be sending their phonics readers with their leveled readers this week. This will help them practice their phonograms while reading to you. It would be so beneficial if they could read this about three times a week.
Poetry - The students have finished learning their poem and are reciting it in class. Ask them to recite it to you. They must stand tall with their hands at their sides and project with a confident voice. They are doing a great job, and they had an opportunity this week to recite their Caterpillar Poem to Mr. Rollo's 5th grade class. It was amazing!
Math - We will continue the subtraction unit and working with subtraction stories (with manipulatives) in class.
Monday- page 55-56
Tuesday - page 57-58
Wednesday - page 59-60
Thursday - NO HOMEWORK
History - We are beginning our Egyptian Unit. It will last all of October and will end the first week of November, with an Egyptian party that all three first grades will be a part of. Please continue to send in your paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls. Also, if you have any interesting ideas or artifacts that you would like to share with the class, I am open.
Science - What a wonderful week we had watching our little panda friend on the webcam. Here is the link if you would like to watch it with your students at home.

This week we will study an endangered animal of the rainforest each day, and finish with the extinction of the dinosaurs. They are going to love this!
Quote of the week -
"Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws." ~~Plato (427-347 B.C.)
