Happy Fall Everyone!

Did anyone happen to see the full red moon tonight? Also known as the Harvest Moon.

Many thanks to all of you for working so diligently with your children to accomplish the homework goals.  If you went to the Singapore/Spalding night you probably know that the homework we give  should not take more than 45 minutes to complete.  Your students know how to do their work swiftly and confidently in class, so I expect they should do that for you as well.  The math scores and spelling score are phenomenal so I know you are doing a great job!
Please reach out to me if you need help. I will gladly call you and speak to you personally.  I have some time in the day to work with students who need some extra help.  I am here for you and your child. Use me!

Spelling:

Monday - child, ice, play, sea, see, bird, cool, earth, feed, fur
Tuesday - green, oil, paint, pool, tooth, teeth, worm, day, eat, sits,
                 sit
Wednesday - write all 21 words ONCE, no markings. Practice for
                 test on Thursday.
Thursday -  Spelling test - in class.  No Homework.

Homework - The students are to write their words three times each night with markings. Each time written will receive one point (total 3 Points).
At the bottom of the page they will write a sentence using some of their words.  I will be looking for capitals (names, and beginning of the sentence) and correct punctuation (question marks, periods, exclamation points). This sentence will be worth 2 points.  The whole page each night will be worth 5 points. Five points will be given when they practice for the test on the night they write them once with no markings (usually on Thursday, except for this week which will be done on Wednesday). Please let me know if I can help with this..

Literature - We will continue reading Owl at Home.  It was so nice seeing new faces for reading groups this week.  The students love it!
Thank you for having your child read each night.  They may read their leveled reader or another book.  Write the title on the line and they can color the star. If you would like another leveled reader send me a note in the folder or email me. I am going to be sending their phonics readers with their leveled readers this week. This will help them practice their phonograms while reading to you. It would be so beneficial if they could read this about three times a week.

Poetry - The students have finished learning their poem and are reciting it in class.  Ask them to recite it to you.  They must stand tall with their hands at their sides and project with a confident voice.  They are doing a great job, and they had an opportunity this week to recite their Caterpillar Poem to Mr. Rollo's 5th grade class. It was amazing!

Math - We will continue the subtraction unit and working with subtraction stories (with manipulatives) in class.

Monday- page 55-56
Tuesday - page 57-58
Wednesday - page 59-60
Thursday - NO HOMEWORK

History - We are beginning our Egyptian Unit. It will last all of October and will end the first week of  November, with an Egyptian party that all three first grades will be a part of.  Please continue to send in your paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls. Also, if you have any interesting ideas or artifacts that you would like to share with the class, I am open.

Science - What a wonderful week we had watching our little panda friend on the webcam.  Here is the link if you would like to watch it with your students at home.

This week we will study an endangered animal of the rainforest each day, and finish with the extinction of the dinosaurs.  They are going to love this!

Week 7....Here we go!

We had a wonderful week in 1B!  Our new Teaching Assistant will be joining us permanently beginning this week.  Her name is Mrs. Katherine Vance and the students enjoy and respect her.  Please see her biography attached.

Honor won the estimation jar this week!  Please make sure your children DO NOT know how many items are in the jar.

Thank you parents for keeping the leveled readers in the ziplock bag and returning them on Wednesday.

Our reading groups continue every Tuesday and Thursday morning. All are welcome to join us just use the sign-up genius.

If you have questions about how I mark your student's pages please speak with me.  In the beginning I told you that I star all activities that are completed with the particular items I was looking for.  While you may think there are a lot of things incorrect on their pages, I ask them specifically for certain items.  We have a long way to go and I don't want them to lose heart and not enjoy their writing assignments.

Check page 40 in the Math Workbook.  The pages listed there need to be completed this week.  I have given the students one month to practice completing their homework pages.  I will begin this week to count unfinished pages as incomplete.  Please make sure you check their work and that they are completing the pages correctly.  This is a team effort and we want the best for them.

We will continue studying about Mesopotamia.  This week we will read the Tale of Gilgamesh and learn about cuneiform writing and the Hammurabi's Code.

Happy September everyone!

I sincerely hope you had a nice Rest and Relaxation (R&R) weekend.

Special Announcement *******************

School pictures will be on September 15th. You all should have received an envelope to return to me if you would like to purchase pictures for yourselves. Students must wear their uniforms for the class picture.

Congratulations to Benjamin Sutton for receiving the Responsibility Award on Friday! 1B is very proud of you and happy you are a member of the class!

Congratulations to John Bruns.  Your estimation won!  Don't forget to refill the jar with something and bring it back to school on Tuesday. :)

Wednesday - time, have, blue, chance, charge, little, are
Thursday - Review jobs of silent E.

3. E makes /c/ and /g/ make their second sound.  Ex. chance, charge
4. Every syllable needs a vowel. Ex. little
5. No job E.  Ex. are

Also, our team has created a more friendly spelling document for you.  The students will write their words three times on the front page, and then at the bottom of the page, they will write a short sentence using some of their spelling words.  Have them underline the words they use.
The reverse side will be used for their spelling words the next day.  We are trying very hard keep our copy amounts down.  I think you shall find this efficient.  Let me know if you need any help.

Reading

The leveled readers went out this last Wednesday.  Thank you parents for your notes and input on this.  It was very beneficial.  I am feeling confident with their current placements.  If you have concerns let me know.  Make sure the books travel back and forth in their plastic bags. This will keep them nice for the next student.  I will replace them Wednesday and they will read them throughout the week.

Our class just finished reciting their Caterpillar poems on Friday. They all did a wonderful job.  For the month of September we will be learning  a poem by Robert Frost entitled The Pasture.
Our proverb for the week is: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

New reading chart

You will notice we have a new and improved reading chart.  I think it is very easy to use.  Your child will color in the stars each time they read and write the title of their book.  I will continue to record their daily reading progress on our class chart.  End of the quarter winners will receive a special gift from me!

History

We will be studying Ancient Mesopotamia.  The students will be able to explain the importance of the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers and discuss their significance to plant growth.  We will plant basil seeds and catalog their growth. We will discuss the meaning of the "Fertile Crescent" and find Babylon, Ur, and the Persian Gulf on the map. We will also discuss how the Ancient Mesopotamians contributed to our lives today.

Science

We will continue studying living things and their environments.  In particular this week we will be taking a closer look at grassland and the underground environments. We will study how a seed travel and discuss the plant uses to the prairie environment.

Math

Thank you to Mrs. Lake and Mrs. Olszowka for a successful Math Center Wednesday.  This was our first attempt and the students loved it.  If you would like to help, Mrs. O. has a sign up genius for that.

We will continue to practice number bonds and number sentences. Thank you parents for making sure their workbooks remain current. Your students will receive one grade for homework at the end of each week.
