This month's virtue: Humility

These are the few ways we can practice humility:

To speak as little as possible of one's self.

To mind one's own business.

Not to want to manage other people's affairs.

To avoid curiosity.

To accept contradictions and correction cheerfully.

To pass over the mistakes of others.

To accept insults and injuries.

To accept being slighted, forgotten and disliked.

To be kind and gentle even under provocation.

Never to stand on one's dignity.

To choose always the hardest.”

I hope everyone had a restful and meaningful Thanksgiving break!  It is hard to believe that this week we enter the month of December.  Where has the time gone?

I had many special moments with my family and friends.  The weather was beautiful and the zoo called my name (my favorite place to go).

This is my grandbaby Jesse and my daughter Jessica.  We loved seeing the ducks and the giraffes!

I am excited about the week ahead!  The progress your children are making in reading and math, plus their Core Knowledge subjects is very encouraging.

Week 15, 2015

It is so very hard to believe that we have entered our Thanksgiving week!  We have lots of fun projects lined up for our Turkey Tuesday. Because it is a holiday week, there will be no homework on Tuesday and the remainder of the Holiday.  Monday homework will be to read for 15 minutes and Math homework pages 80-83.

Please be sure to check the planners tomorrow for the results of the Spelling test.  A few of the parents will have to sign and return the test to me.

It was so sad to say goodbye to our friend Scarlet. Students made beautiful cards for her and she received many gifts.  We all wish her well with her new adventures.

It was also a great privilege to be a part of you children's Winter Concert.  I was so proud of them.  They were learning many things that night, and I am sure they are well on their way to continuing their love of Music and Music Performance.

Ben did a great job of introducing the song.  Emily did too, but my camera turned off before I could get her picture...sorry Emily!

These next couple of days will be review days for the students.  We know they will be very excited (as will I), about the Holiday.  Be assured there will be continued learning with fun reading and math projects, and many opportunities to participate in classroom discussions.

Please let me know if your child would like to participate in the Spelling Bee.  The lists are on line and the links are on this page.

In the spirit of the season I would like to say how thankful I am to be your child's teacher.  I am loving them more and more each day.  It's fun to think about them on the weekends, and wonder if they will like something I see in the store, or something I am planning for their units.  You have helped to make this first quarter (and soon to finish second quarter) a fun and pleasant experience!  All of my parents are very honoring, respectful and kind!  Many blessings for a wonderful week!

In the World History and Geography section, we introduce children to not only ancient civilizations but also to topics in the history of world religions.  Many people who contributed to the Core Knowledge curriculum agreed that religion is a shaping force in the history of civilization and thus should be a part of what our children know about.  In introducing children to the history of world religions, we focus on major symbols, figures, and stories. Our goal is to be descriptive, not prescriptive, and to maintain a sense of respect and balance.  As we share about the symbols, figures, and stories I mention to our scholars that these are practices and beliefs of the people of that religion. If you practice one of our studied religions please feel free to send in any symbols to share!

Virtue of the Month:  Courage

According to the American Dictionary of the English Language - by Noah Webster 1828 courage is defined as:

(French from caeur, Latin cor, THE HEART
BRAVERY; that quality of mind which enables men to encounter danger and difficulties with firmness, or without fear; valor; boldness; resolution.  It is a constituent part of fortitude; but fortitude implies patience to bear continued suffering.

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.

Week 12 - November 2-6, 2015

Thank you to all the people who helped make the Read-a-thon a success, and for all the wonderful books purchased for the classroom!

A gentle reminder - Parents please send appropriate protein enriched food for your children in their lunches.  I do believe they will feel better in the afternoons. Also, may I suggest one fruit and one sweet item.  Their morning snacks should not be full of sugar (except for fruit).  A cheese slice, a fruit roll-up, a piece of fruit are fine.  Please do not send cookies or candy items.  I know we spoke about this at the beginning of school, but I want all of us to be careful to keep the guidelines of the school.

Mrs. Sutton has given a website suggestion for parents who want to check safe, peanut-free snacks.
http://www.firstkidspreschool.org/images/peanut-freesnacls.pdf

SPECIAL ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!

Starting tomorrow the new winter dress code will be in place. Pants must be worn (no shorts) and girls have to wear tights with their dresses.

Congratulations to Riley (Citizenship) and Kodie (Honesty) for receiving their virtue awards on Friday.  You are great examples to have in the classroom!
